Three-Pronged Major Attack Miraculously Averted

Reminiscent of the "real" Purim of almost 2,500 years ago, Israel has, once again, experienced a spate of "Purim miracles."

Most notable was a meticulously-planned three-pronged major attack that was averted on Shabbat morning in northern Gaza. The operation involved four Palestinian terrorists in three vehicles, one of which was a car-bomb laden with explosives, another of which was disguised as an IDF jeep, and a third that was both laden with explosives and disguised as an IDF jeep.

The attack began when a car-bomb, probably a taxi, sped towards an IDF post at the southern entrance of Erez industrial zone workers' terminal - and suddenly exploded. No one was hurt, aside from the driver, who was killed. Shots were reportedly fired from within the car before it blew up.

Two jeeps camouflaged as IDF vehicles - painted brown and bearing customary markings - then arrived at the spot. A Palestinian terrorist came out of one jeep and opened fire at an IDF position. The soldiers returned fire and threw a hand grenade at the terrorist, but the gunman was not hit and returned to the jeep. Both jeeps then continued towards the Erez terminal.

At this point, a second, unexplained explosion occurred, this time destroying one of the two jeeps as it passed a PA police position at the entrance to the Erez terminal.

The remaining jeep continued towards yet another IDF position in the Erez terminal and tried unsuccessfully to break through the checkpoint. A Palestinian terrorist wearing an IDF uniform came out and opened fire at the soldiers in the post, who returned fire and killed both the attacker and the driver.

In searches conducted after the incident, two Kalachnikov assault rifles, ten hand grenades and ten magazines were discovered. The plan is assumed to have been that while the first car engaged the soldiers with gunfire and then explode, the jeep-bomb would arrive and blow up upon the soldiers, followed by the third vehicle, whose occupants would fire upon the rescue personnel. Two or three PA policemen were killed, as were two terrorist drivers and one who was seriously wounded.

IDF spokespersons afterwards stressed the alertness of the IDF soldiers in preventing this large-scale attack. "This attempt," they noted, "is evidence of long-term and serious planning of the three terrorist organizations (Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah) to carry out a large scale attack and target IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians at the Erez Crossing."
